Gary’s Tectonic Series is inspired by the very earth he lives on. His home lies in the region of California that is folded by fault lines and prone to sudden shifts that reform the land on a majestic scale. This geological roulette wheel has shaped both the land and the consciousness of those who live there. Compressional Wave #1 is an evocative interpretation of the vast forces that have sculpted his terrain. The piece gives the impression that it has been made from a flat piece of timber, crumpled almost as if it were paper, then folded and refolded. It embodies both tension and release, frozen in space.
Back arc basins are also geological phenomena formed by cataclysmic forces. The superb deep vessel Back Arc #2 is an evocation of these forces that grind and twist the very earth. It has a sense of arrested movement, held in stasis, but poised to move again – as is the land where this wood was found.
